In the half-light/half-dark,
we whispered our hopes and fears
both cautious and caring,
listening and listened-to....
Within that embrace without touch,
I saw darkness glinting off your inner tears,
and longed to wipe away their bitter trails
and replace them with a smile.
But our inner tears (and inner smiles) are the
names which God gives us for ourselves,
so that we may tell when we are being called
to the true home of our heart.
In the half/light/half-dark, I began
to hear your inner name's first sounds,
to share the name that is secretly mine, and
to wonder at the name that might be ours.
